Scriptural Principles for Planning

Scriptural principles for planning

What sorts of plans should I be making?

1 Kings 5:5

“And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.”

When God calls you to a specific task, you should make plans to obey. Obedience often requires discipline and sacrifice. How well prepared are you in these areas?

Proverbs 31:15

“She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.”

The woman of noble character in Proverbs 31 is a good example of someone who plans her time wisely. Often, making a list of things to accomplish for each day can help us stay on track and be productive and avoid the frustration of wasting time. If you are in a position where delegation is necessary, thinking about tasks and assignments in advance will also minimize the frustrations of others.

Romans 1:13-15

“Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. [14] I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. [15] So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.”

Romans 15:24

“Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.”

Plan to serve and minister to others. In Paul’s case, God didn’t always put him where he thought he would serve. But Paul continued to make himself available to serve wherever and whomever God chose. As a result, he developed a passion for helping all kinds of people.

1 Timothy 4:14-15

“Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. [15] Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.”

Plan to exercise your spiritual gifts. Using your spiritual gifts is both conducive to, and a byproduct of, spiritual growth. If you don’t know what your gifts are, meet with godly advisers or people you trust in order to discover the abilities God has given to you. Then make plans to throw yourself into your tasks.

Hebrews 10:25

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Plan for times of worship and fellowship with other Christians. Don’t let the busyness of life cause you to neglect these important times of friendship and encouragement.

Genesis 2:1-2

“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. [2] And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”

Exodus 20:8-11

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. [9] Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: [10] But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: [11] For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Jeremiah 17:22

“Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.”

Plans for hard work are beneficial, but so are plans for times of rest. Work ahead during the week so that you won’t feel pressured to work on the Lord’s Day. Make it a truly holy day of rest.

James 1:12-15

“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. [13] Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: [14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. [15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

1 Peter 5:8

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”

Plan ahead of time to stand firm against temptation. Then, when you are tempted, you will be prepared to resist and be ready to do the right thing.

Matthew 6:19-21

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matthew 6:31-33

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. [33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Philippians 3:17-20

“Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. [18] (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: [19] Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) [20] For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:”

Although it is wise to make plans for your future on earth, it is infinitely wiser to make plans for your eternal future in heaven. Invest in what will last forever.

Exodus 3:1-6

“Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. [2] And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. [3] And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. [4] And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. [5] And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. [6] Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.”

Exodus 34:2

“And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.”

Joshua 5:13-15

“And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? [14] And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? [15] And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.”

Matthew 17:1-5

“And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, [2] And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. [3] And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. [4] Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. [5] While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”

Sometimes God asks us to plan special times to be with Him. He may use these times to refresh, renew, correct, or direct us. No matter what the elevation, we can call these encounters mountaintop experiences.

Mark 3:9

“And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.”

2 Timothy 4:9-13

“Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: [10] For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. [11] Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. [12] And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. [13] The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.”

Make practical plans. Jesus anticipated a large crowd and asked His disciples to get a boat. By thinking ahead, He was able to preach more effectively. And despite setbacks and difficulties, Paul was constantly planning for effective future ministry.

1 Corinthians 16:1-3

“Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. [2] Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. [3] And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.”

2 Corinthians 9:5-8

“Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. [6] But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. [7] Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. [8] And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”

Plan to give your first fruits, or “tithe”, to God. This allows you to give cheerfully. Don’t neglect this, or you will feel financial pressure later on and be tempted to hold back.

Deuteronomy 6:20

“And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What meanthe testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?”

Plan to teach your children about God and His commands. Be prepared to talk with them about all He has done in your life.

Matthew 25:1-13

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. [2] And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. [3] They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: [4] But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. [5] While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. [6] And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. [7] Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. [8] And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. [9] But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. [10] And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. [11] Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. [12] But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. [13] Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Matthew 25:19-21

After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. [20] And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. [21] His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Making plans to save and handle your resources responsibly is important. Sticking to a regular plan of tithing, saving, and careful spending with what you have now will enable you to handle the responsibilities of greater blessings in the future.

What gives me confidence in my plans and my future?

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Being sure of God’s good intentions for you will strengthen your confidence. The wonder of Creation, the evidence of God’s constant care, and the priceless gift of Jesus Christ for our salvation give us confidence that He will help and guide all who trust in Him. When you are tempted by thoughts of hopelessness, remember that God created you and has a good plan for you. While you may not understand how certain life events fit into God’s good plan, you can be confident that God is watching over your life and guiding you in a specific direction.

Ephesians 1:9-10

“Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: [10] That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:”

Confidence remains as you remember that God is in control of all things and always has been. Jesus Christ, who is now resurrected and sovereign over all things, will govern and guide us in the best possible ways.
